KC Urban Cyclist Project Statement

The Kansas City Urban Cyclist Project came form simple origins, I thought it would be interesting to document my friends and fellow cyclists who call Kansas City home. The core idea has always been to raise visibility for cycling in and around the Kansas City area, most notably the urban core featuring the cyclists who ride the streets of Kansas City everyday.

The Kansas City Urban Cyclist Project came form simple origins, I thought it would be interesting to document my friends and fellow cyclists who call Kansas City home. The core idea has always been to raise visibility for cycling in and around the Kansas City area, most notably the urban core featuring the cyclists who ride the streets of Kansas City everyday.

All too often cycling is seen as a childhood endeavor, or men on TV in the colorful kits racing across France every summer. There are millions of all ages that ride bikes and they come from every facet of society. Everyone at one time or another has ridden a bike, and most have found great enjoyment from the experience. Unfortunately, many get to a point where we often leave our two-wheeled companion behind and take up driving, a lure which is hard to deny in our society today. The feeling of freedom that driving gives you is much the same that cycling did when you were young. Many forget the excitement that a bike first gave you, it was often your first true taste of freedom. It allowed you to leave the confines of your home and the control of others. Venturing away from home, free to come and go as you wished to explore your newly expanding world on your terms, no longer dependent on others to get you to places you wished to go.

Many have re-discovered the freedom and excitement that cycling affords. There are as many reasons people take up cycling, as there are cyclists, each with a unique story. Many have discovered that cycling in the city is just as easy or easier than driving and often less troublesome and more enjoyable. Issues such as traffic jams, parking are no longer a concern, along with the escalating cost of gasoline and maintenance of an automobile. Others choose cycling for the fresh air, the benefits gained from the exercise and the impact to the environment. Many have even given up driving all together, finding it surprisingly easy to make the switch from driving to cycling as their main mode of transportation.

The urban cyclists of Kansas City a re a varied group, coming from different backgrounds with one thing that links them together, a shared love of cycling. A quick look at those who have been photographed show the varied backgrounds, and the varied modes of cycling which best suit their nature. The bicycles they choose are as unique as they are; no two bicycles are the same just as no two cyclists are the same. Everyone adds their unique signature to what they ride and how they ride. For them it’s more than a means of getting from A to B, it is a way of life, we would have it no other way.
