Photography is by far the biggest thing in my life. It is my consuming passion. However, I am not remotely a man of one interest only, and cycling is also very, very important to me. It seemed inevitable that there would eventually be some overlap between the two. However, it hasn’t come to fruition in the most predictable of ways. At very least, the final product isn’t always what one would expect.

At times it probably seems that I’m almost reluctant to make cycling photographs. I suppose it’s because I don’t want to make all the same cycling photographs that have already been made. I’d like to think that with some effort and critical thinking, that’s something I (as well as other photographers) can largely avoid. It’s not easy, necessarily, but worth the effort all the same.

A lot of the challenge of doing good cycling photography, at least of cycling in motion, has a lot to do with how one moves along with it. Shooting from a motorcycle, car, or the back of a truck is one way to do it. Shooting from a bike that you yourself are riding is another. The latter appeals to me more, overall, but it is decidedly more difficult to do more technically-advanced shots while also powering yourself down the road on two wheels that you still have to worry about balancing, steering, and so on.

The challenge is a welcome one, as I believe that better, more interesting images occur more frequently in the face of challenge. Anything that makes us slow down and think specifically about the images we are making and how we are making them increases our chances of breaking through our own prior limitations and achieving something more. True, a challenge can also increase our chances of failure, but we have to accept that possibility if we are to really try to make progress in our art. This holds true regardless of art form.
Cycling photography is something I feel I am really only starting. I have more ideas than I can possibly execute right now, and I know that in the future those ideas are only going to evolve into bigger and better ideas. I am excited to see the cycling images I create in the coming years and decades, and I think I have good reason to be.
